Conner's 2nd Birthday

Ammon and I have decided to only do birthday parties for our kids on their odd numbered birthdays. Birthday parties can get expensive quickly and are a lot of work. So on their even birthdays, we just do a family get together with cake and ice cream.

On his actual birthday we had one of his favorite meals, grilled chicken, corn on the cob (he calls it popcorn, I think because of the church song "Popcorn Popping") and bananas.

We skyped with Grandpa and Grandma Dietz and Conner got to open a present for them while they watched! It was so fun!
We had a mini birthday celebration with Grandpa and Grandma Eggett when they were visiting a couple of weeks before, but we FaceTimed with them too!
We decided to wait and have the cake and ice cream with the Powell's on Saturday.

Earlier in the year we went to a train show because Conner loves trains! Conner's favorite part was a duplo lego train. We decided, while Conner was playing with it, that we'd get him one for his birthday and that it would be incorporated into his birthday cake.

Friday during the day I baked the cakes and that night after the boys were in bed, the cake magic began. We thought Cake Boss would be an appropriate show to watch while making the cake, but Netflix had removed it.
Ammon made a wood base and a brace for the tunnel. Then I cut the cake to fit around it. Ammon took a knife and did most of the shaping.

Next I did a "crumb coat" of white frosting, then piped on the grass!

Ta-da! All done! We think it turned out pretty amazing!

Here's Conner seeing it for the first time Saturday morning:

He absolutely loved playing with it! We ended up moving the train to the ground so that he could play with it before his cousins came over.

Once the Powell's arrived, we opened presents.

Man what a lot of fun gifts! Conner is one lucky and loved boy!

Next came the much awaited cake!

This picture shows the wood support that Ammon made.

  1. Oh my goodness! What an adorable cake! What little boy wouldn't absolutely LOVE to have a train go through a cake tunnel. You and Ammon did great! So glad Conner had a wonderful birthday!
