Conner's 2nd Birthday

Ammon and I have decided to only do birthday parties for our kids on their odd numbered birthdays. Birthday parties can get expensive quickly and are a lot of work. So on their even birthdays, we just do a family get together with cake and ice cream.

On his actual birthday we had one of his favorite meals, grilled chicken, corn on the cob (he calls it popcorn, I think because of the church song "Popcorn Popping") and bananas.

We skyped with Grandpa and Grandma Dietz and Conner got to open a present for them while they watched! It was so fun!
We had a mini birthday celebration with Grandpa and Grandma Eggett when they were visiting a couple of weeks before, but we FaceTimed with them too!
We decided to wait and have the cake and ice cream with the Powell's on Saturday.

Earlier in the year we went to a train show because Conner loves trains! Conner's favorite part was a duplo lego train. We decided, while Conner was playing with it, that we'd get him one for his birthday and that it would be incorporated into his birthday cake.

Friday during the day I baked the cakes and that night after the boys were in bed, the cake magic began. We thought Cake Boss would be an appropriate show to watch while making the cake, but Netflix had removed it.
Ammon made a wood base and a brace for the tunnel. Then I cut the cake to fit around it. Ammon took a knife and did most of the shaping.

Next I did a "crumb coat" of white frosting, then piped on the grass!

Ta-da! All done! We think it turned out pretty amazing!

Here's Conner seeing it for the first time Saturday morning:

He absolutely loved playing with it! We ended up moving the train to the ground so that he could play with it before his cousins came over.

Once the Powell's arrived, we opened presents.

Man what a lot of fun gifts! Conner is one lucky and loved boy!

Next came the much awaited cake!

This picture shows the wood support that Ammon made.

No more 1 year old

Today was Conner's last day of being a 1 year old! So of course I had to take some pictures! As I'm sure you've figured out by now, if I'm taking pictures of one of the kids, the other wants in on it too!

I love this smile and happy boy!

This kid doesn't crawl yet, he's pretty close, but not quite. However he has mastered scooting around. He scooted his way under the end table to get to his toys!

Galveston and Houston

Last year we did a Galveston/Houston weekend get away over Memorial Day weekend. While there we found out about a sandcastle competition they do every year the first weekend of June...we were one week too early! We decided that we wanted to come back for the competition in 2016!

This year Kendall and Melissa decided to do a weekend trip to Utah just the two of them, so we offered to take their kids, but their trip happened to be the same weekend as the Sandcastle Competition. So we took all the kids! It was really fun! The plan was that the Powell kids would be with us from Friday morning until Monday afternoon.
Friday was a lot of packing of bags and the van. We also checked to make sure the rain wasn't going to affect the sandcastle competition. They said it would happen rain or shine! This is a big thing: they set up canopies, haul in extra sand, there are judges and the people also get to vote. It's suppose to be awesome!
Saturday morning we woke up early and left on the road for Galveston. While on our way, they cancelled the competition because it had rained so much that the parking lots were flooded. We were very disappointed, but that wasn't going to stop us from having an awesome weekend! Really the only thing that changed was our Saturday afternoon plans. The rest of it was already planned.
First we went to the Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum. It was pretty cool! We got to learn about oil rigs and see the different under-water suits they've worn through the year.

Next was our impromptu plans. We decided to go to Chuck E Cheese. We got a bunch of tokens and had a really fun time for a few hours! Afterwards we picked up some Sam's Club pizza and took it to our hotel and ate. Then we went swimming at the hotel pool. After that we all took showers while watching a movie and then went to bed.

Sunday morning we went to the Houston NASA Space Center.

Compare how it feels to lift the exact same weight on different planets!

Welcome to space!

Ready for take off!

What!?! Aliens?

Driving a rover

 Landing a rocket

Space Suits through the times

The Discovery

A life size rocket! It was SO huge!

I got to participate in a Mythbusters experiment! Can you dodge a paintball? I can!
It started off with me and this man doing a reaction test with both light and sound. Evidently I won both, but I'm not sure it was accurate...either way, I won, so I went on to dodge the paintball.

Ammon starts laughing at me at the very beginning of the video. He thinks it's funny how much padding/protection they put on me because 1) it reduces the fear of getting hit and 2) it made it a lot harder to move! I, on the other hand, didn't feel like it reduced my fear. I was still pretty nervous! I didn't even notice the paint on the shield, just heard the splat! It wasn't until I watched the movie that I noticed a lot of what was going on around me!

We got to tour the decommissioned Independence Space Rocket

G&G Eggett for Memeorial Day Weekend

Grandpa and Grandma Eggett came to visit us for Memorial Day weekend! We had such a fun time! They flew in Friday afternoon. That night we went to Gruene where we had dinner and walked around.
Saturday morning we dropped Isaac off at his cousin's house and the rest of us went tubing on the Comal River. We had such a fun time! I still love the chutes! That afternoon while Conner, Isaac and Ammon took their naps, my parents and I went clothes shopping and had a really fun time!
Sunday we went to church and afterwards had a birthday celebration for Conner. Since his birthday is in 2 weeks, we thought it would be fun to let him open Grandpa and Grandma's present! We also had cupcakes. Conner is really into Mickey Mouse right now, so we made him Mickey cupcakes. Super simple, but cute!

Isaac loved the paper too!

They gave him this really cool book that has a track in it. It comes with a train that you wind up, and then it drives on the tracks all over the pages of the book! You can tell by Conner's face how much he loves it!

Here are the Mickey cupcakes Grandma and I made.

Conner loved blowing out the candles! We had to relight them a few times so he could blow them out again.

On Monday we went to the Coleman (camping gear) warehouse sale, but because of bad weather the night before, they cancelled it. We were disappointed, but some yummy doughnuts cheered us up! In the afternoon Grandpa and Grandma watched the kids while Ammon and I went out on a date! That night Grandpa and Conner made cookies together! Conner's favorite part is pushing the on button and turning up the speed!

Could this be genetic? It seems oddly familiar...

Conner drug the step ladder over to "watch" Grandpa put the dough on the tray. While Grandpa wasn't looking he snuck a whole ball of dough! Lol! Yup. His love for cookie dough must be genetic!
Tuesday in the late morning they left to go back home. We miss them already!
We had such a fun time having Grandpa and Grandma here! Come again soon!

We were at the Powell's house tonight and Kendall pulled out the kids' karate gear to practice with them. Conner decided he wanted in on the action so he put on one of the protective helmets. Kendall helped him put on the gloves and they sparred!
